Geranium Essential Oil is steam‑distilled from the leaves and stalks of Pelargonium odoratissimum (apple geranium). It carries a rich, floral aroma with subtle notes of mint and apple. Known for its balancing and uplifting qualities, this oil is widely used to support both emotional wellbeing and physical comfort.
Geranium oil is valued for its ability to help regulate oily and dry skin, while also promoting mental balance by easing stress and anxiety. It is traditionally believed to influence the adrenal cortex, contributing to hormonal equilibrium. Over time, geranium oil has been used for a wide range of concerns including acne, bruises, burns, cuts, dermatitis, eczema, haemorrhoids, ringworm, ulcers, breast engorgement, oedema, poor circulation, sore throat, tonsillitis, PMS, menopausal discomfort, stress, and neuralgia. Its strong scent naturally repels mosquitoes, and adding a few drops to shampoo is said to help eliminate head lice.
Historically, geranium plants were grown around homes as protective hedges believed to ward off unwanted spirits — much like they deter insects. Native to South Africa, Réunion, Madagascar, Egypt, and Morocco, geraniums were introduced to Europe in the 17th century. Although around 700 varieties exist, only about 10 produce essential oil in viable quantities; garden varieties typically yield too little oil for extraction.
