Lemon Essential Oil has a bright, sharp, and refreshing aroma. It is extracted from fresh lemon peels through cold expression, preserving its vibrant citrus character. Known for its uplifting and clarifying qualities, lemon oil is often used in room fresheners for offices and workspaces to promote focus and mental clarity. Traditionally, it has been associated with supporting rheumatism, arthritis, and gout, and has been used to help ease skin concerns such as abscesses, boils, carbuncles, and acne. It is also valued for boosting the immune system and gently cleansing the body.
When used in an oil burner or diffuser, the vapour is commonly used to help with colds, laryngitis, headaches, and flu. Its aroma is said to lift the spirits and clear mental fatigue, easing feelings of depression, irritation, stress, lethargy, and tiredness. Added to bath water or blended into massage oils, lemon essential oil is traditionally used to support digestion, increase energy, ease infections, assist with weight concerns, and relieve rheumatism and stress. It is also known as a natural remedy for hangovers.
The lemon plant is believed to be native to India and possibly China, later brought to Europe by the Crusaders during the Middle Ages. Due to its high content of vitamins A, B, and C, lemon juice was historically given to sailors to prevent scurvy and other deficiencies. The first significant lemon cultivation in Europe began in Genoa in the mid‑fifteenth century, and the fruit was later introduced to America by Christopher Columbus. Through Spanish exploration, lemon seeds spread even further. For centuries, lemons were used mainly as medicine and ornamentation, with culinary use developing much later.
