Ylang Ylang comes from a tall tropical tree native to regions such as Malaysia, the Philippines, and Indonesia. Its distinctive yellow flowers, known for their long trailing petals and rich fragrance, produce an essential oil widely used in perfumery, cosmetics, and increasingly in the food industry. Despite being abundant and affordable, Ylang Ylang oil remains highly valued for its luxurious scent.
Scientifically, Ylang Ylang is considered a mental stimulant, while aromatherapy traditions celebrate it as one of the most effective oils for deep relaxation. Its aroma is believed to help lower blood pressure, ease stress, and support emotional balance.
Used in baths or massage blends, it naturally enhances calm and comfort. It is often applied to help relieve stress, depression, shock, and anxiety. As a hair tonic, Ylang Ylang is said to help balance oil production.
Note: High concentrations may cause headaches or nausea in some individuals.
The name Ylang Ylang translates to “flower of flowers” in Malay. Traditionally, its sensual and soothing fragrance made it a symbol of romance — the flowers were scattered on the marriage beds of newlyweds in Indonesia.
Muslim women once burned the oil to scent harems, while in China it was used to perfume the robes of mandarins. Its long association with perfume, beauty rituals, and relaxation continues today.
