Latin Name: Amyris balsamifera
Plant Part Used: Wood & Branches
Origin: Jamaica
Extraction Method: Steam Distillation
Amyris Essential Oil—often referred to as West Indian Sandalwood—has a warm, soft, woody aroma reminiscent of true sandalwood. It is steam‑distilled from the bark and branches of the Amyris balsamifera tree. Due to its naturally high oil content, the wood can burn on its own like a candle, earning it the local name “candlewood.” Amyris is widely used as a more affordable alternative to pure sandalwood.
Traditionally, amyris oil has been used to cleanse wounds and support recovery from influenza and diarrhoea. It is also said to be effective for easing cystitis and vaginal infections. When used in a vaporiser, its calming aroma helps reduce anxiety, tension, and insomnia, and is often associated with aphrodisiac qualities, helping relieve impotence and frigidity. Amyris is also used to support respiratory comfort, including coughs, colds, and bronchitis. Its grounding, soothing nature makes it popular for meditation. Additionally, it is known as a gentle muscle relaxant and emollient.
The botanical identity of the amyris tree was not fully understood until 1886, when microscopic examination distinguished it from true sandalwood. The Amyris balsamifera tree grows wild in Haiti. Throughout history, essential oils like amyris were treasured for their healing and aromatic properties—valued so highly that ancient cultures considered them more precious than gold.
