Rosemary Essential Oil is steam‑distilled from the flowers, stems, and leaves of the rosemary herb. According to the British Pharmacopoeia, oil distilled specifically from the flowering tops is considered superior to that obtained from stems and leaves, which is where most commercial oils are produced. Rosemary’s aroma is distinctly woody and herbal, and in aromatherapy it is valued for its ability to refresh, energise, and stimulate the mind.
Traditionally, rosemary oil has been used to support the healing of wounds and burns, and to ease colds, flu, fatigue, digestive discomfort, headaches, asthma, bronchitis, gout, rheumatism, liver and gallbladder concerns, water retention, and poor circulation. For massage, it is commonly blended with base oils such as almond, apricot kernel, or hazelnut. Rosemary is also well known for its benefits to hair, as it is believed to increase circulation to the scalp and encourage healthy growth. This oil should never be taken internally, and it is not recommended during pregnancy or for individuals with high blood pressure or epilepsy.
Rosemary has a long history of use in the ancient world. It was associated with improved memory and became a symbol of fidelity, often used in weddings, funerals, and religious ceremonies. Guests at weddings were traditionally given a sprig of rosemary tied with ribbons as a token of love and loyalty. “Hungary Water,” a preparation made by soaking fresh rosemary tops in wine, was famously created for the Queen of Hungary and was said to have cured her paralysis.
