Patchouli Essential Oil is derived from the Pogostemon cablin plant, a member of the mint family, and is known for its rich, musky‑sweet, spicy aroma. Native to Malaysia and India—where it is traditionally called puchaput—the name “patchouli” comes from the Tamil words pachchai ilai, meaning “green leaf.” The young leaves are dried and lightly fermented before steam distillation, a process that deepens the oil’s fragrance and enhances its potency over time. Patchouli is highly valued in skincare, especially for supporting scar healing and tissue regeneration.
In many eastern cultures, patchouli oil is used in potpourri and sachets placed between linens and clothing, both for its fragrance and its ability to repel insects and bedbugs. Aromatherapists often describe patchouli as emotionally balancing, helping create a warm, comforting atmosphere. Used in an oil burner, it is traditionally associated with easing anxiety and low mood. Added to bath water, patchouli is believed to support skin and scalp health, help with fungal infections, reduce fluid retention, break down cellulite, and ease constipation. Its strong regenerative properties make it popular for acne, eczema, ulcers, weeping sores, athlete’s foot, and other skin concerns.
Historically, patchouli leaves were placed between Indian cashmere shawls shipped to Victorian England to protect them from moths—so much so that the distinctive scent became a mark of authenticity. In Europe and America, patchouli oil and incense surged in popularity during the 1960s and 70s, especially within the counterculture movement, as its strong aroma masked body odour and the scent of burnt cannabis. Patchouli was also used as a natural conditioner for dreadlocks. In several Asian regions, the oil has even been used traditionally as an antidote for snakebite.
